'Double Lunar Dogs' was a 1980s performance based on Robert Heinlein's science-fiction novel Universe(1951)and was first designed for the University of Arts Museum, Berkeley, CA. In the novel a group of people are lost in space with no memory of where they originated. During ‘Double Lunar Dogs’ Jonas executes paintings on paper (‘performance drawings’) while performing a script with props and footage from NASA. The script includes the following passage: 'Remember this from long ago, Back and forth and sideways. I can't read what made us leave. That grass grew up between the cracks And castle wall came tumbling down The children played in plastic rooms With tanks and guns and dolls. 'Hide below' the generals shout, The dogs swim out to tell us more, That hearts are made of flesh and blood And stars move round to meet the moon. Hold on, hold on But fall through space. There is no up, there is no down, And no more time to speculate.'
