'Electric Fairy', Derek Jarman's first film, is presented in collaboration with Jarman's film producer. James Mackay. 'Derek showed me Electric Fairy around the time when I first met him in the late 70s. We had to go and find a Steenbeck as it was 16mm so couldn’t view it at his flat. Derek got very excited about it, especially the part where the actor eats the caterpillar (which he wasn’t supposed to do). As there was only ever one print and the negative had succumbed to vinegar syndrome (i.e. become useless) the film was rarely screened. In fact I believe the next time that it was viewed was when I had it scanned in 2008. As a film it fits in precisely with the slightly later films on Super 8 – Miss Gaby, I’m Ready for My Close Up, At Low Tide, Tarot etc. It carries the influence of Derek’s friend and fellow artist Andrew Logan. As a first film, the improvised action, the carefully chosen props and the precise framing, sets the style and direction of Derek’s future works.' James Mackay, 2020
