This painting is one of a series of works made at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness in 1991 at a moment when Jarman's extraordinary garden was flourishing. The art historian Michael Charlesworth remarks that these paintings were ‘a faithful impression: a surprisingly naturalistic depiction of a small piece of the landscape at Dungeness. As Derek put it, the garden contained 'scarlets and blues...fire-bright in the wind'’ This work is part of the exhibition DEREK JARMAN: MY GARDEN’S BOUNDARIES ARE THE HORIZON at The Garden Museum, London which runs to 13 December 2020. https://gardenmuseum.org.uk/exhibitions/derek-jarman-my-gardens-boundaries-are-the-horizon/
