Derek Jarman

In this catalogue of Derek Jarman’s last set of 17 paintings, the artist and filmmaker provides the viewer with another perspective on his creative abilities and the concerns which preoccupied him in the latter part of his life.

His work is a powerful testimony to the way he dealt with his HIV status, his sexuality, with homophobia in the press and their manipulation of the AIDS epidemic, and to his courageous confrontation with his own mortality.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, the works in Evil Queen turn a traditional form to the artist’s own purposes.
