Sakepirinha is the name of a cocktail invented by the sizeable Japanese community living in Sao Paulo in Brazil. The cocktail consists of lime, crushed ice, fine brown sugar, and sake. Shimabuku introduced this drink to the Brazilian Café Bankete located just off Wentworth Street, as part of the project, The Street, organized by the Whitechapel Gallery in 2008. Shimabuku installed a neon sign advertising Sakepirinha where the cocktail was served throughout his project, Album. This work reflects Shimabuku’s interest in cross-cultural experiences, which is prevalent throughout his work.
