The work was first presented in 1991. It is the most minimal and fundamental of Bulloch's early drawing machines from the 1990s, a category of works she has returned to in recent years after a long gap. Its most obviously resonant art-historical precedent is of course Rauschenberg's 'Erased de Kooning'. This work was a cornerstone of Time & Line, a major presentation of Bulloch's drawing machnes at the Städishe galerie Wolfsburg in 2011, as can be seen from the catalogue from that show I have loaned to the gallery along with another Bulloch museum catalogue in which it features.
