MUTE
5 July - 4 August 2018
Private view: 4 July, 6 - 8 pm
‘Mute’ is a gathering of artworks united by their diverse intimations of thwarted communication, restrained expression or uncommon quietude. This is a world away from the frenzied clamour for attention and the steady stream of packaged sound-bites with which we constantly contend. Some of these works speak quietly but pack a significant punch. Others seem to resonate at an unfamiliar frequency. Some remind us that introversion or reticence are understandable responses to the world we find ourselves in. Others, though, register the urgency of speaking out, as well as the obstacles in the way of doing so. Bodily constraint and repressed utterance, self-containment and self-cancellation, artful obliquity and exquisite silence are disparate aspects of this convocation of works spanning half a dozen countries and more than half a century.
